Belief versus Being

A thought occurred to me a couple of weeks ago that our beliefs often get in the way of ourselves just being .Do we actually need to believe in ourselves or is it simply a matter of just being ourselves without the interference of a belief? In William Shakespear’s Hamlet, Hamlet said”

To be, or not to be, that is the question

Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer ( a belief)

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles (another belief)

Well, we are all certainly suffering from the slings and arrows of outrageous decisions made by people who are forcing their ideas on the world through their actions. And because of these beliefs that are based on fear, uncertainty etc they are suspending us and making us unsure of just how to be.

We often find ourselves tangled in the web of our own ( and ,others) convictions, questioning whether it's our beliefs that shape us or if they're simply obstacles to our authentic selves. The more we focus on what we think we should believe, the further we might drift from simply living in the present moment, allowing ourselves just to exist as we are. Perhaps it's in letting go of these internal narratives that we truly discover what it means to simply be. From the very beginning of our life, we are literally shaped by the beliefs and experiences of other people trusting that they will interpret the world for us to our benefit. When we are young ,we never question this authority and so the stage is being set for a lifetime of living with beliefs that may totally contradict what is natural to you.

Sometimes, our beliefs can act as barriers, shaping our perceptions and responses in ways that may not always serve us. Instead of letting these preconceived notions dictate our actions, perhaps we’d benefit from embracing authenticity and presence, allowing ourselves to simply exist without judgement or expectation.

Are some beliefs a way of keeping us away from our true nature?

It’s worth considering whether certain beliefs serve as protective mechanisms, constructed out of fear or a desire for acceptance, rather than genuine reflection of who we are. These beliefs can sometimes distance us from our innate instincts, making it harder to access our true feelings and desires. By recognising which beliefs are inherited or externally imposed, and which ones resonate deeply within us, we might gradually peel away the layers that obscure our authentic selves. We are in a time of history where we are all questioning what we believe and what too believe. We are removing the layers of conditioning that have been so all prevailing over many decades, conditioning that has manipulated human beings to such a degree that people have moved away from self-reliance and seek instead for the rules that will govern us as opposed to our self-governing.

It’s worth considering whether certain beliefs act as protective shields, masking our vulnerabilities but also distancing us from our genuine selves. When we become aware of this tendency, we can begin to question which beliefs are truly ours and which have been adopted unconsciously. By doing so, we might open the door to a deeper connection with our own nature, free from inherited assumptions and external pressures. We are feeling external pressures more intensely than ever. I remember a time when there was less pressure than today. A time where we lived by principles that were based on respect and natural alignment with the world and each other. When I was younger, the world had problems, but it wasn't as overwhelmingly uncertain as it is now.

It’s a confronting thought: what if the beliefs we cling to aren’t really ours, but echoes of the voices that came before us? The journey towards self-understanding might mean questioning not only what we believe, but why we believe it. By gently challenging these inherited assumptions, we can open space to reconnect with our inner compass and live more genuinely, guided by our own sense of what feels right—rather than what we’ve been told should be right.

WHY DO WE BELIEVE WHAT WE DO?

As we look towards our own being we are positioning ourselves in the energy of the now. It’s now we are living, it’s now we are observing our possibilities, it’s from the now where we launch ourselves towards our possible futures. It’s the now where we walk towards new versions of ourselves, so important to our evolution. If we focus on the now, we are focusing on the state where all life’s power is.

Reflecting on the shifting landscape of belief, it's clear that the path to authenticity calls for honest self-examination. We can begin to untangle the roots of our convictions, tracing which come from genuine experience, and which have been absorbed from the world around us. This process isn't always comfortable, but it offers the chance to create a more meaningful sense of self, unburdened by the weight of inherited expectations.

In our beginnings we were light beings totally in alignment with our natural surroundings. There was nothing to inherit, we simply lived the life of being natural in the natural environment. One could call it an all knowing, all being, all experiencing environment and all was of the same frequency. There were no beliefs that created conflict of interest, no need to question, it was a state of living, an ultimate formula, harmony.

And then we lost the harmony if only to look for it again

It’s worth noting that the journey back towards authenticity is not a straightforward one and often involves moments of discomfort and uncertainty. As we peel back the layers of conditioned beliefs, we might find ourselves facing questions we never expected, and feelings that challenge our familiar sense of identity. Yet, this process of exploration can bring us closer to a life that feels more aligned with our true values and aspirations, rather than simply adhering to the expectations of others.

We traded harmony for conflicting beliefs, replaced natural behavior with unhelpful conditioning, and exchanged collectiveness for separation—leading to today's discomfort and uncertainty.

This loss of harmony did not occur overnight; rather, it unfolded gradually as societal norms and cultural expectations began to shape our perceptions and behaviors. Over generations, the simple act of being was overshadowed by the compulsion to conform and the instinct to seek approval, which in turn suppressed our innate wisdom. As a result, many of us now navigate life guided more by collective narratives than by our own inner truth, often feeling disconnected from the natural ease and unity that once defined our existence.

As we navigate this process, it becomes essential to cultivate patience and compassion for ourselves. The act of questioning and rediscovering our beliefs can be unsettling, yet it also ushers in opportunities for growth and transformation. Embracing uncertainty allows us to move forward with greater clarity and trust in our own inner wisdom, fostering a sense of freedom that is rooted in self-understanding. And of course, the knowledge of being the self.

In a time where living the best version of yourself is more important than ever before, our relationship with our inner self seems an essential lifeline that we extend to ourselves.

To truly reconnect with our authentic selves, we must become mindful of the ways in which external influences shape our thoughts and actions. This awareness is the first step in reclaiming the power to define our own values, beliefs, and aspirations. By embracing the present moment and listening deeply to our inner guidance, we give ourselves permission to break free from limiting patterns and rediscover a sense of harmony within and in that state is the state of being.
